I believe that it is the integrated circuit, which made personal computers, smart phones and most of the electronics we enjoy possible. Before the integrated circuit shrank transistors down to size, computers took up whole rooms. Our world would be very different had the IC been developed.

I think this is one of those questions that cannot be answered fairly, because some of the most important inventions could never have been invented without prior inventions. For example, I might think the greatest invention is the Internet. But without the prior invention of the computer, the Internet probably would not have been considered. And, without the invention of the transistor, computers might never have evolved.

So, as I say, I think I'd select the Internet as being the greatest invention of the 20th century, because it is becoming sort of a 'culmination' of many other great inventions; one which holds power we have only begun to understand, y'know? I'm just sayin'...

I reckon wireless telegraphy was the greatest invention. Wireless telegraphy is the communication of Morse code telegraph messages using radio waves, and up until the late 1890s, telegraph wires wires were needed for sending messages. The theories of Maxwell, experiments performed by Hertz and development work carried out by Marconi in the late nineteenth and early 20th century resulted in the invention of wireless telegraphy and this eventually led to the telecommunication systems we have today. Radio, TV and satellite broadcasts, cell phone communication and radar owe their origin to the work of these pioneers.

In my opinion, one of the most important technological developments of the 20th century was the creation of Ford's assembly line style automobile. Model Ts changed how people travel, and how people see the world. They were the start of today's mobile lifestyles. Also, this process of assembly line work had been created before this point, as had automobiles but the invention of a car that anyone could use changed lives tremendously and had a profound influence on society.

The greatest invention ever is the flush toilet. I think of everything ever invented the flush toilet is the most life changing invention ever. I cannot even get my mind to use anything else as a toilet especially not a hole in the ground like the earlier people. I can go without electricity but without my flush toilet: Never!

I would say Internet is the greatest invention of the 20th century.

The most important one is the semi-conductor though, everything is based on the silicon, IC,radio, computers, wireless, etc, etc.
