Why do people try to use winter weather to disprove global warming?

7 Answers
Is it because global warming should be referred to as climate change instead? Are people confusing weather with climate? Please elaborate on your opinion to the best of your ability. If you think climate change doesn't exist, please explain why you think it does not. I'm not looking for any specific opinion, I'd just like to hear what others think on this very intriguing subject. Thank you in advance for your answers!

People do confuse weather and climate, some knowingly and others unwittingly. However, changes in weather extremes are associated with climate changes.

It's important to recognize that the earth's climate has been changing without man's influence for millions of years, so it's disingenuous of those people who suggest that it is only human activity that is responsible for climate changes. That's not to say that we couldn't be responsible for a part of the current global warming trend. But it's interesting to note that despite rising temperatures globally, ice extent in Antarctica (as of January 2014) remains well above average, setting records for both summer minimum and winter maximum in the least year.

I think people do confuse climate change with global warming. It is true that the climate at both poles is changing, but there isn't anything we can do about it. Climate changes go hand in hand with evolution. Both the evolution of the planet and the evolution of life on the planet. Every species on the planet must learn to evolve and adapt to the particular changes taking place. Climate change has been a reality since the beginning of the planet. The earth has gone through many ice ages as well as tropical periods of warmth and sunshine. The climate changes are progressive and unstoppable. We as a civilization must learn to either adapt to the changes if we hope to survive, or succumb to them and become extinct. It's our choice.

Global warming means the earth is getting hotter. If it is cold out then it is not getting warmer. People focus on the warm part of it and they don't check the temperatures all over the world. They also don't consider that warm air often attracts cold air. Not very long ago it was colder than usual and their was a really big ice store. We even had frost quakes. I never heard of those before.

People try to use winter weather to disprove global warming because it is cold. They are thinking about the local temperature. I don't think global warming should be referred to as climate change. The phrase climate change does not really tell me anything. Maybe people are having trouble with the term global.

I often watch the Science Channel and one of the facts called out by Dr. Michio Kaku is that the Earth, as it stands today, is made for 1 billion people all riding bi-cycles. Today we have nearly (if not over) 7 billion people on the planet and most have motor vehicles of some sorts.

All of that said, being that we are obviously not going to be able to get people to stop driving cars and we're just now on the break of looking into alternative energy sources vs. the utilization of fossil fuels, I think most people tend to find any excuse they can to ignore the current matters at hand. In any case, this is a great question worthy of additional insight.

Most people make the claim as a joke. It's a satirical take on the idea of global warming. Those who don't believe in Global Warming tend to point towards times in history when climate fluxuation was more significant, the realativly small effect many scientists believe human action has on the atmosphere, the corruption in the MMGW (mane made global warming) community, and the lack of any real and measurable data proving any of their major theories.

People don't understand that Global Warming just isn't a great name for the climate change. It makes them believe it should be warmer, not colder. I personally think it should be called Global Climate Devastation or something like that. People tend to respond better to more dramatic names. They might take it seriously.

The funny thing is, 'global warming' does not mean everywhere will get hotter. Some places will get colder and more rain. People use cold weather to disprove global warming because they are not really clued up on what global warming is all about, to them it is just a term they heard about
