A barometer is an instrument which is used to measure atmospheric pressure or the pressure that the atmosphere holds on the Earth. The main principle of the barometer was discovered by Evangelista Torricelli, who was a 17th century scientist. Barometers are used to help predict forthcoming changes which result from changes in atmospheric pressure in the air.

A mercury barometer is thin tube which is closed at one end which is filled with mercury and the open end is stood in a mercury-filled container or a reservoir. The height of the vertical mercury column that can be maintained by the atmospheric pressure pushing down on the reservoir is taken as the value of atmospheric pressure at the time of reading. The column is normally about 750-760 millimeters high. The mercury barometer is the most precise but a another compact instrument is the aneroid barometer which has no chemical liquid. This makes up of a small metal similar to a box chamber with a thin corrugated lid which is evacuated, in other words to create a vacuum. Subsequent variations of pressure in the aneroid barometer move the corrugated lid and this movement is magnified and then translated onto a dial. Hop that helps.

A barometer is an instrument which measures atmospheric pressure. Pressure can be displayed in millibar (normal atmospheric pressure being 1000 millibar or 1 bar) or hectopascals the metric equivalent. Atmospheric pressure is about 1013 hectopascals.
Original barometers consisted of a tube closed at the top end filled with mercury. The level of the mercury increased or fell in the tube as atmospheric pressure varied. normal atmospheric pressure produced a column height of about 760mm of mercury.
Another type of barometer called an aneroid barometer commonly used in homes uses an evacuated concertina type metal canister. Variations in atmospheric pressure cause the canister to expand or contract and through a series of gears and levers, this change in dimension is amplified to produce larger deflections on a circular scale.
Modern barometers can use an electronic sensor to detect changes in pressure. A piezoelectric crystal can produce a voltage which depends on pressure. This voltage can be conditioned by an electronic circuit and used to produce a reading on an LCD meter or input to a computer system.
