Is a rainbow a bow or a circle?

Since a rainbow is the light from the sun shining through rain and coming back at you, it could be a circle if the sun is directly behind you and shining in all directions around you. Since you are standing on the Earth, you only see that portion that you are in the right position to see. If you moved fast several miles sideways, you'd see a different portion of the "circle," or maybe no rainbow at all. So, if someone is standing next to you, you actually are not seeing the same rainbow, although the differences would be infinitesimally small.
All of this hinges on the rain and sun cooperating with your position, of course.

I like the sundogs - rainbows of ice.

A rainbow is simply an illusion we see when sunlight defracts through water droplets in the air. No two persons ever see the same rainbow the same way. Therefore, the shape of a rainbow is relative, however, is generally seen as an arc across the sky. In certain situations, a rainbow can be an entire circle, in others, just a bow.

A rainbow may spread across the whole sky. The ends of such a rainbow may appear to rest on the ground. All rainbows don?t form complete arcs, however. A rainbow can?t appear in a part of the sky where there is no rain.

It is a arch colored with red to violet and outside to inside.
Isaac Newton arbitrarily cut out the rainbow in seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Well, a full circle rainbow can only be seen from above. A complete circle rainbow should really be defined as a cone.

Rainbows usually form in the shape of an ' arch' or bow that extends across the sky.
