Do you like lightning?

I have to confess I love lightning storms. They get the adrenaline pumping. When I was younger I would watch out the kitchen window and see the building across the street get hit all the time. It was a water plant so it attracted the bolts. We are having a lightning storm right now and it is almost like a strob light. Too cool although I am staying away from the windows. Probably should turn of the computer and unplug everything.

Yes I love it and am obsessed by it. My friends don't understand my interest but it's just so spectacular and just like a free fireworks show. When I know lightning is forecast, I normally turn on my radio and tune to a blank spot on the LW band to pick up the static. If I can hear crackling on the MW band then the lightning is getting close. There is just such a sense of tension, pardon the pun, during the build-up to a storm. Unfortunately here in Ireland we only get a few days on average of lightning in any one place per year, the storm is normally over in less than 20 minutes and the lightning strikes are few and far between. I remember a storm in 1985 though and the lightning was overhead. The lightning strikes lasted for ages and happened every few seconds just like in a horror film. The next day we heard that there was major flooding in a nearby town, crops were damaged by hailstones and phone lines were damaged. The bad quality photograph below is from that night of a ground stroke near a TV aerial at the back of my house.

I will have to admit I have always enjoyed electrical storms from the time i was a little kid. Of course, I wanted to be inside or, at least, under a shed. The electrical storms seemed to have a hypnotic effect on me. I could sit at the window or be outside under a shed and just watch the elements as long as the storm would last. Even better than this was to be in bed, at night, and listen to the rain pouring down, and feelthe vibrations of the thunder and hear the sharp piercing sound as the zigzag lightening streaked from the sky to ground.

I also loved to sleep in a house with a tin roof and listen as the huge rain drops as they pounded on the tin roof and then hold my breath waiting for the thunder and lightening to follow. Even though I was aware of the dangers presented by the electrical storms, I thought this was the best sleeping weather ever and I still love to sleep in this type of weather.

I have a love hate relationship with thunderstorms myself. The lightning and the thunder fascinate me and I am in awe of them but they still are frightening. Especially when they roll together one on top of the other. I am sorry I don't go near the window or anything metal or running water because I have heard of people getting electrocuted, and since I am always shocking myself -the washing machine, the light switch, the plugs and yes even the doors in stores shock me from time to time - I somehow feel that lightning might take a shine to me.

It is stunning to see it just once I know it is not too close to me.

To be frank I am pretty much afraid of lightning.Whenever, whenever I am at terrace and if lightning appears I apparently leave the terrace. The thunder of storms and lightning are pretty much scary.I like rain and lightning because its rare phenomena in the city where I live. Its always hot weather in Jaipur.
Lightning looks beautiful but when I am out of its reach.I do read newspaper people getting killed by lightning fall on there head.
I always want to remain safe of such situation and its better for me to keep a decent distance from lightning.
Thank you for the question.

I do like to watch lightning but not as much as I once did. I am a little too scared of tornados now to really enjoy a good storm. On the rare occasion that I just happen to see heat lightning without a storm, I do enjoy that. I also have a plasma ball lamp, so I can now enjoy watching lightning without fear. You may want to buy one, as well.

I enjoy a good thunderstorm, so yes, I like lightning.

We get a few good storms in the spring and summer and my wife and I will almost always go out on our porch and watch them. If it is not raining, sometimes we will sit on our deck.

Our 10 year-old son doesn't like the noise and he usually keeps inside.

Remember during a thunderstorm to unplug all electronic equipment, telephone lines and routers or modems if possible to avoid damage. Devices may incorporate surge protection but there is a limit to the protection which it can provide. Also don't use your land-line, use your cell phone instead!

I cannot think of anything more beautiful than a lightning storm. I especially like ones that are up in the clouds. There have been photos taken of storms during volcanic eruptions like this one pictured in Chile. The eruption in Ireland also produced some spectacular images.

I do love to watch lightening, especially sheet lightening. I find it quite beautiful. I particularly love to watch a storm over the ocean, when we are on vacation. I actually look forward to a rainy day for that reason.

I have always loved lightning, but five years ago I moved to the western mountains in Canada, where a lightning hit causes forest fires every summer. So it's a bit more scary now to have a lightning storm.
