Because a ghost must be something a person actually sees, the reality exists but it's in the mind of the seer and, yes, it's been proven that people can see something in reality, for example, when they are under the influence of a hallucinogenic drug such as LSD, or at other times such as when they are under stress or in shock that puts them into an altered state of consciousness. Wanting to see a loved one who has died, for whom one grieves, may be so powerful an emotion as to cause someone to see that person and speak with him or her. So ghosts are real to the people who see them because the mind actually perceives the ghost, although other people usually cannot see that ghost.

It's been proven that a hallucinating person does actually see and hear things. They don't simply imagine it. The person isn't lying about what he or she perceives. However, to say that those things exist objectively, rather than subjectively only in the mind of the seer, would require others to be able to see and hear those things as well. Ghosts exist, just as the thoughts and dreams of people definitely exist as realities. But for a ghost to be an objective reality, capable of being perceived by anyone, the ghost would have to be a tangible thing which everyone can see, hear, and touch.

Intangible things such as dreams and thoughts surely do exist for all of us. They are real, and everyone has experienced these things. However, they are experienced by only one person at a time usually, although it's possible for several people to think the same thing simultaneously, thus offering proof that ESP (extrasensory perception) is possible. In more rare circumstances, it's also possible that more than one person could see, feel, and hear a ghost. This would make the ghost more convincingly real. But it would be just as real if only one person perceived it, because that reality would exist for that singular individual.

To sum up, ghosts are real, but they are capable of perception by only certain people at special times.

There is an answer above that declares that "there is a lot of scientific evidence to support that ghosts are real." The commenter offers as support the work of Loyd Auerbach and Gary E. Schwartz.

However, to the best of my knowledge, Loyd Auerbach, despite having lectured extensively and written several books on the topic, has yet to conduct one scientific study supporting the existence of ghosts. If he has, I invite the author of the comments above to offer a link to them so they can be properly examined.

Gary Schwartz (a self-proclaimed medium), on the other hand, HAS conducted "investigations," but his "research" applies only to mediums communicating with the supposed afterlife, not the existence of ghosts (spirits who supposedly visit the material plane).

So the examples that supposedly "show" that ghosts are "real" include one paranormal investigator who's never conducted a scientific study of ghosts (let alone one that has produced convincing results) and another whose experiments don't examine ghosts at all! Thus, we're left still waiting for the evidence that "science has shown that they are real."

The comments above speculate that there is "one reason or another" that some don't believe in the existence of ghosts. But skepticism requires only ONE reason -- the absolute lack of convincing evidence. If and when that evidence appears someday, then I'm certain most of us will happily re-examine the topic. But until then, we'll continue to consider notions like ghosts as nothing more than paranormal nonsense.

I have never actually seen one but I think they exist due to a frightening event that happened to me when I was younger. I really cannot see any other explanation, it just had to be something supernatural.

I stayed with a friend in an old house which was a bed and breakfast and while I was there my bedroom door was opening at an alarming speed and then closing very slowly in the middle of the night. My friend and myself were the only people there apart from the lady who owned the bed and breakfast. It was the most frightening thing I have every experienced but on questioning the lady the next day she said we were the only customers at that time.

Some people have to actually see the evidence before they believe in ghosts but others are more open minded, Even though I have never seen one I truly believe in their existence even if they are just echos of past events.

There's a little pub in one of the towns I used to live which is supposed to have had a fire many years ago where someone was killed in one of the rooms. Apparently, on talking to the landlord, they cannot let Room 4 because it gets so hot people cannot tolerate it.

Some people are more able to open their minds to let the unexplained in. Children are supposed to be particularly susceptible to seeing ghosts or even remembering past lives. I think it is a fascinating subject.

I know for a fact that ghosts do exist. I don't have an overactive imagination or are hallucination in any way. I've seen many over the years and I do live in a house where a lot of people have died. I can see them and hear them only because I'm picking up good and bad energies much quicker. A friend of mine died over a year ago of ovarian cancer and she was a very troubled soul in life. She was always unhappy and chose not to ever go anywhere butto to work, she was an alcholic as well. After she died she appeared in my house several times, she rented one of our rooms. Yes ghost are spirits that can not move on. I don't watch ghost movies or horror movies. It is so overrated and funny. People sometimes forget that we are human (body) and spirit(soul). Your soul is your personality. If the body is sick or dying how can the soul function properly? Everyone believes what they want to believe. They think that ghosts look like people with blood and dirty clothes on. Totally not. I live in the real world and I'm not on drugs or anything like that. Choose to believe what you can or cannot see. This might be one of those mysteries that will never be solved, maybe until it is your time to leave then you might only see really if ghosts do exists. The body might die but not the spirit. Hope it helped.

Over the years there have been several ghost stories, many of them were made to scare people, the idea of a man woman or child as a ghost wearing clothes glasses etc, as some people claim to have seen is for obvious reason false, clothes cannot turn into ghosts neither can glasses. There is no absolute proof that ghosts exist, and I personally believe they only exist in human imagination, we see or imagine things and believe it to be true, many people mistake the wind, air blowing on your face shadows and even misplacing objects as the presence of a ghost, most commonly people may be stressed, paranoid scared or want to believe what they hear and interpret them into a presence of a spiritual being.

If humans or any animal turns into a ghost, why would it hang around? ? how can it think without a brain? how can it see without eyes?

Millions and millions of people animals and all living creatures have died of centuries, how can all these ghosts fit on this planet?

Why is it only some people who claim they can see ghosts?

There is no factual evidence that ghosts exist, neither is there factual evidence they don't, but however, the idea of a ghost lurking around us everyday seems impossible to imagine.

There is a lot of scientific evidence to support that ghosts are real. In the field of parapsychology, great strides have been made in showing that there is life after death. Loyd Auerbach is a leading researcher in this field.

Another is Gary E. Schwartz, a professor at the University of Arizona, who conducted a project known as The Afterlife Experiments.

In addition, Duke University has supplied a lot of evidence to show the existence of ghosts.

The bottom line is that although some people, for one reason or another, do not wish to believe in them, science has shown they are real.

No they aren't. I have never seen one as well I don't think I will ever see one. I think ghosts are our imaginary outputs. You can check it out, just watch a lot of horror movies, some movies about ghosts and so on and then go at midnight to attic, or graveyard and you will feel way scared than if you would not have seen these movies!

I agree with Junkyl32 I don't believe that ghosts are real, either. They're nothing but a very persistent figment of human imagination.
