In exact words it is:
A body in rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
In laymen's terms it basically means that things like to stay as they are. Think about an object in space with no friction or air resistance. If it is at rest it will remain at rest, if it is moving with constant velocity it will remain at constant velocity unless for example another astroid hits it (acted upon by an unbalanced force)
This can also be referred to by the phenoma of its easier to move things that are already in motion
An object in motion will remain in its state of motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
In other words, if an object is moving it will keep moving at the same speed unless the forces acting on it are uneven. If there are two or more forces that balance out (like gravity and air resistance when you're skydiving) you won't speed up, even though there are forces acting on you. If the forces don't balance out, you will accelerate in the direction of the total unbalanced force (this leas right into Newton's second law).
The same goes for objects that aren't moving.
Newton's 1st law states that a body in movement will keep its velocity until an external force acts upon it.
This means that if there was no gravity, drag or any other external force on a ball that was going about, it wouldn't unless something acted upon it to change its direction or speed and thus changing it's velocity.
Fnet is the total interraction from the forces that exert on an object (stationary or not).
When Fnet=0, the object will keep moving at a constant speed ( if it was moving) or it will stay calm ( speed=0 ). This is Newton's 1st Law.
