Hello,
To start, in order to subtract fractions (or add them for that matter,) you need to give each one a "common denominator." A denominator is the number on the bottom of the fraction bar, "common denominators" are two like denominators. To do this, the fraction 3/12 needs to be multiplied by 2, so it becomes 6/24, and the fraction 5/8 needs to be multiplied by 3, so it becomes 15/24. As you can see, both fractions now have a denominator of 24. Now the fractions can easily subtracted, as you can think of the two fractions as "6 oranges" and "15 oranges." Take the numerators, which are the numbers on top of the fraction bar, and subtract them. 6-15=-9, so you are left with -9/24. This is not your final answer though, as it can be simplified. You will learn more about simplifying fractions in class, but for now I will tell you that -9/24 simplifies to -3/8. So your final answer is -3/8. Hope I helped, and good luck!

Gurldo84 is correct.

Since 3/12 = 1/4 (divide the numerator and denominator of 3/12 by 3), we have

3/12 - 5/8 = 1/4 - 5/8

The least common denominator of 1/4 and 5/8 is 8. Since 1/4 = 2/8 (multiply the numerator and denominator of 1/4 by 2), we have

3/12 - 5/8 = 1/4 - 5/8 = 2/8 - 5/8 = -3/8

The difference is negative since 3/12 = 1/4 < 5/8.

Check: We must show that 5/8 - 3/8 = 3/12.

5/8 - 3/8 =2/8 = 1/4 = 3/12.

3/12, 5/8

The lowest common denominator for 12 and 8 is 24. So you need to restate these two fractions using 24 as the denominator, meaning you write two equivalent fractions.

5/8 would become 15/24, and 3/12 would become 6/24. So it is:

15/24 minus 6/24. Answer: 9/24. If you reduce it it becomes 3/8.

You could also have reduced 3/12 right off the bat and gotten the same answer. (5/8 - 1/4 = 3/8)

What is the difference between three-twelfths and five-eighths

the difference between 3/12 and 5/8

But 3/12 can be reduced to 1/4

so that
5/8 - 1/4

L.c.m of 8 and 4 = 8

=( (5*1)-(2*1))/8

=(5-2)/8

=3/8

Therefore the difference between 3/12 and 5/8 is 3/8

To subtract five-eighths from three-twelfths, the terms first must have common denominators. They both have a common denominator of eight, so you can reduce three-twelfths to two-eighths. Then, you can proceed with the subtraction.

2/8 - 5/8 = -3/8

The answer is -3/8.

3/12=3x2/12x2=6/24 5/8=5x3/8x3=15/24 -9/24= - 9:3/24:3= -3/8

3/12 - 5/8 = 6/24 - 15/24 = - 9/24 = - 3/8 The answer is -3/8.

3/12ths = 6/24ths
5/8ths = 15/24ths

6/24ths - 15/24ths = -9/24ths. This fraction can then be simplified to -3/8ths
