According to Gray's Anatomy, the deltoid muscle or deltoideus is a large, triangular muscle that covers the shoulder-joint in front, behind, and laterally and arises from the lateral third of the upper surface of the clavicle, from the upper surface and lateral margin of the acromion, and from the posterior border of the spine of the scapula. At its insertion the muscle gives off an expansion to the deep fascia of the arm.
