If Your mouth Was Sealed Airtight Just Before a Sneeze, Would Your Lungs Burst?

Would your lungs burst or be damaged?

Really? No one here knows the "silent sneeze?"

Next time you are alone and about to sneeze, just cover your mouth and pinch your nose. Hold it back with your willpower and hands. Nothing comes out, you shake a bit with the force just like a normal sneeze, then go on with life.

Been doing this for years and I am not dead yet. Have also seen others doing it at assemblies, meetings, during speeches, so as not to be a distraction. For those of us with allergies, sneezing 10 times in a row during a meeting brings the whole thing to a stop while everyone stares at your snot-covered face. I'd rather get some lung damage thanks, but my lungs feel fine.

I say try it alone first, as if some air makes it out - it often makes a very rude noise! Make sure you are proficient before attempting in a crowded place.

No since the air would escape through your nose. Next would be your cheeks flexing out. This would allow a good bit of the air to leave your lungs. Now if we consider that your nose is sealed and your cheeks are compressed, the sneeze would be very similar to an attempted cough while choking. All the air would try to force out of your lungs with nowhere to go. This wouldn't cause any permanent damage but it would be quite painful.

Last serious cold I had really mucked up my sinuses with heavy goop. Took some real pressure to blow any of it out ... and I actually felt the membrane that separates the tear duct from the sinus pop. Now if I blow real hard, I can see a fine spray from the tear duct.

The lungs probably wouldn't explode, there are too many other, fragile, membranes that would fail first. Like the ears.

Most likely not. Since your nose is also connected to your lungs, it would probably just come out your nose very forcefully and probably painfully.

No, lungs wouldnt burst. Ear drums would probably hurt while it may not come out of the nose beautifully either.

Ok assume your nose is also sealed and your cheeks are prevented from puffing out to any major extent.

You could easily pop your ear drums
