The River Nile in northeast Africa, is the longest river in the world. It measures 6,700 kilometers (4,150) from its remotest source in the highlands south of the equator to the Mediterranean Sea. It drains an area of about 2,850,000 square kilometers (1,000,000 square miles), or about one tenth of Africa. The trunk stream of the Nile is formed at Khartoum by the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile. Only after Aswan, Egypt, site of the last of the river's cataracts, does the floodplain begin to widen. Since 4000 B.C., when the river spawned the rise of the early Egyptian civilization, the waters of the Nile have supported, by irrigation, almost all of Egypt's agriculture and much of Sudan's.
