Only after Aswan, Egypt, site of the last of the river's cataracts, does the floodplain begin to widen. Since 4000 B.C., when the river spawned the rise of the early Egyptian civilization, the waters of the Nile have supported, by irrigation, almost all of Egypt's agriculture and much of Sudan's.
