Fool's gold refers to the mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite, with the chemical formula FeS_2. As seen, it is simply a crystal formed by iron and sulfur.

The reason behind the term fool's gold is because of the similarity to gold in terms of pure resemblance. More than once have people probably been fooled to believe that pyrite is gold. However, as compared with pure gold there are several distinct differences. First of all, gold is found in irregular clumps if they are not within ores whereas fool's gold are found in highly regular shapes such as cubes or or multifaceted crystals. In addition, the hardness is different between pure gold and fool's gold. The color, in particular when wet also changes in a different manner as compared to pure gold. While fool's gold turn either greenish pure gold will be more shinier and more yellow when it is wet. Therefore, it is actually quite easy to see if fool's gold is true gold by simply wetting it and observing the color change.

Fool's Gold is actually a mineral called pyrite. It's formula is FeS2 because it is an iron sulfide. Pyrite is extremely common (though people have undoubtedly fought to the death over it more than once throughout history) and can be bought very cheaply at museums, metaphysical stores, and on eBay and Amazon.com.

Not all fools gold is in these large regular cube form. Where we mine gold in Zimbabwe the gold and pyrite is very often found in the same ore. Gold is also much heavier than pyrite and when a prospector pans the would be gold it will float out the pan with the mud , whereas gold gets stuck in the groves of the pan.

Fools´s gold is called Pyrite . It is called fools gold because often it is found in the same rock as gold. Pyrite is slightly greener in colour . If you dont know what to look for it can be confusing . Prospectors know that if you wet Fool´s gold it does not shine whereas real gold shines when wet.
