When we think of precious metals we usually think of pretty metals such as platinum, silver and gold. These metals are typically used in making jewelry and are expensive.

Copper may not be regarded as a precious metal, but the price of copper has soared over the last few years and copper is now worth a lot of money. In the UK thieves have stolen copper roofing and copper water pipes, amongst other items of copper, and sold them on to generate some cash.

When my wife and I were buying our gold wedding bands the person in the shop told us that a copper ring would probably cost more than a gold ring and if we wanted a wedding band that was different but still worth a bit of money we should think about buying copper wedding bands. The only problem with a copper wedding band is that it would make your finger turn green over time as I pointed out to the person in the shop.

I believe it would be best described as an industrial metal. The price per ounce is much, much lower with compared with metals such as gold, platinum, and even silver so it's not really a good investment unless you have the resources and capitol necessary to acquire and house some serious weight. If you find a bunch of copper for free, it would most likely be worth the ride to a nearby scrapping facility. Call ahead to get an idea of how much you stand to make per pound so you don't end up spending more in gas then you stand to earn.

Copper isn't considered a 'precious metal', although the scrap price of copper might indicate it is higher in value than other scrap metals such as steel or aluminum. Copper doesn't fall into the precious metal category like gold and silver, it is considered more as an industrial metal.

In the commodity trading context, copper is considered as precious metal. In reality it is actually not that precious.
