The largest river in the United States would be the Mississippi River. This chief river has the largest drainage system in the United States. The basin of the Mississippi is 1,151,000 square miles!

The Mississippi River has many tributaries and drains al or part of 31 United States and 2 Canadian Provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains.

It ranks as the fourth longest and tenth largest river in the world. I have always been fascinated by the Mississippi River.

One of the important facts about the Mississippi River is that it cuts through or borders the states of Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

This is determined by the source that one use to make the determination. The USGS (The United States Geological Surveys designates the Missouri River as the largest. This is because it does not consider the Atachfalaya to be part of the Mississippi.

The largest river is determined by the areas of basin drained, the rate of flow at the mouth of the river, and the length of the river from source to the mouth of the river. When the Atachfalaya is not considered to be a part of the Mississippi, then the Missouri becomes the largest.

The longest river in the United States is the Missouri River, which measures 2,341 miles in length. The Missouri River is slightly longer than the Mississippi River, which is 2,202 miles long. The Missouri River travels through seven states including; Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. The Missouri River empties into the Mississippi River which in turn empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Hope this helps and thanks for the question.

I guess it depends on what you mean by largest. Assuming you mean "longest," that would have to be the Mississippi/Missouri river. The Missouri river flows into the Mississippi, I think, and on its own the Mississippi isn't the longest.

The largest river would be the the Mississippi River which at its widest is over 11 miles across. It is also the longest river in the US and contains the most water.

The largest river system in The United States is known as The Mississippi-Missouri . This great river is fed by both The Ohio & Tennessee rivers.

What is the largest river in the U.S., not the longest river?
