There are two types of twins, identical and fraternal (non-identical). Identical twins are the result of a single egg cell being fertilized, and splitting into two developing fetuses during pregnancy. They will have almost identical DNA, and are always the of same sex.
Fraternal, or non-identical twins, are the result of two different egg cells being fertilized during the same ovulation cycle. They are not genetically identical, but are as genetically similar as regular siblings. They can be the same or different sexes.

Nonidentical twins are known as faternal twins and they are generally the result of two eggs being fertilized at the same time. Faternal twins are no more identical then any normal pair of siblings and may be either the same sex or two different sexes.

It's in the name: "nonidentical". They are twins that do not look like each other. They could be the same sex or not. You wouldn't think they are twins just by looking at them.
