Can you go to sleep with your eyes open?Stylis84 - 6 Answers
You are able to keep your eyes open when you are awake because your brain sends signals to the voluntary muscles around your eyes to contract. This is a conscious and voluntary process.
When you are asleep these delicate muscles are in their relaxed state, hence your eyes remain closed. The signals to these muscles are turned off when your subconscious takes over.
Hence it isn't possible to sleep with your eyes open unless you're thinking of clamping them to some external device, which I strongly advise against!
The instances where people involuntarily sleep with their eyes open is actually a disorder, and it affects a surprisingly large chunk of the world's population. Your eyes need to be closed for repair and healing processes to take place, and to not be damaged from external factors that you will be unaware of while asleep.
Yes. The first example of this is sleep walking. Some people have been noted to be sleep walking with their eyes open. There was also the case of Randy Gardner who was a high school student who set the record for longest time awake (11 hours). However, a noted psychologist Dr. William C. Dement monitored Gardner and hooked him up to an EEG machine. Several times throughout the 11 days, the EEG showed brief episodes that appeared as though he had entered REM sleep though his eyes remained open. This is an extreme case however. It should be noted that the Guinness Book of World Records will no longer recognize someone who breaks this record due to possible health issues, (Gardner had serious behavioral and cognitive issues and even hallucinations)....
Oh my God, no. I could never ever sleep with my eyes open, and I do have to say that I have tried it. I had an uncle who used to sleep with his eyes semi open and he always scared me when I was passing by his bed because I had the feeling he was awake and watching me when he was actually sleeping deep.
It did made me freeze for a second and pace my heart and I have always found it kind of creepy, because they weren't open all the way, nor closed. They were just half open and looked like a scene from a scary movie when they pretend to be asleep but actually follow the character with his eyes and jump on him at some point.
Have a nice day :)
I personally can't do it unless it comes automatically when I don't know. But I have seen many people do it - sleep with their eyes open as if they are not asleep. Many even reject doing so when the fact is that its what they do and a reason I think that its done without ones knowledge.
But for me, I don't do it and nor can't sleep with my eyes wide open.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Some people can sleep with their eyes open; but, I cannot. I wouldn't want to. Sleeping with them open means that there would be moisture issues which could lead to real problems with my eye health. Also, if they are open anything can drop into them; and, I might not wake up. This could lead to problems with my eyesight.
I've hear people say that they can. If I were to consider myself as having done it, it could only have been while in a daydream, where my mind is far away. I\m not sure if anyone can truly get deep sleep with their eyes open....
