There are 8 or 9, depending on how you define a planet. There are 8 planets that have concentric orbits and all in the same plane. Concentric meaning each of these eight have orbits that are, for the most part, circular and centered on the sun. Pluto, on the other hand, doesn't have a concentric orbit. Its orbit is noticeably eccentric and actually crosses over inside the orbital path of Neptune. It also has an orbit that's oddly tilted in relation to the flat plane the other planets orbit in. These are a couple of the reasons the debate as to whether Pluto is actually a planet or not continues. Also, to qualify for planet status, the object needs to satisfy three conditions.

It needs to be in orbit around the Sun, it needs to have enough gravity to pull itself into a spherical shape, and it needs to have "cleared the neighborhood" of its orbit.

Pluto satisfies the first two, but not the last. There are plenty of other objects in Pluto's neighborhood, that make up what's known as the Kuiper Belt. Pluto has pretty much been demoted to 'dwarf-planet' status.

Officially there are now 8 planets, Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus and Neptune. Pluto used to be known as the 9th planet, but after the discovery of the '10th' planet Xena, which was larger than Pluto, scientists started arguing about what is and what is not a planet. Since considering Pluto as a planet would also mean that Xena would have to be accepted as a planet too, Pluto was officially removed from planet, and is now considered a planetoid.

In our solar system so far as is currently known there are NINE major planets as well as innumerable minor planets or asteroids. The major planets can be sub divided between the inner terrestial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) and the giant gaseous outer planets(Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) with one unique distant planet (Pluto).

9, although some scientist will dispute that number claiming some planets aren't truly planets.
